Flags to Fly at Half-Staff Thursday in Honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day

Posted on May 14, 2014

Amarillo, TX – In 1963, President John F. Kennedy established May 15 as National Police Memorial Day and the week it falls in as National Police Week to commemorate those officers who have given their lives to protect our society. The tradition continues as President Barack Obama issued a proclamation declaring Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week. In honor of the men and women in law enforcement, the City of Amarillo encourages everyone to fly their flags at half-staff this Thursday, May 15, 2014.

In addition to flying flags at half-staff, every year the Amarillo Police Department’s Honor Guard is joined by law enforcement officers from around the Texas Panhandle for a wreath laying ceremony recognizing Peace Officers Memorial Day. This year’s ceremony is Thursday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at the “Field of Honor” in Llano East Cemetery. Entry into this area is on the east side of S. Arthur Street, north of S.E. 34th Avenue.

The ceremony will honor those who have given their lives in service throughout the United States — 105 in 2013, and 42 so far in 2014. An honor guard comprised of officers from the Amarillo Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and both Potter and Randall County Sheriff’s Offices will present the colors. The ceremony will also include a traditional rendition of “Taps,” and bagpipe performance. The ceremony always draws attendance by a wide variety of uniformed police, fire, and other first responder agencies from all over the panhandle. However, this service is not just for law enforcement personnel. We encourage and invite everyone to attend to show support for the men and women who have died in the line of duty.
